**Safety First: Always shut off circuit in the area you are working on. Test to see if the Light fixture is still not live by flipping the switch on/off. If you are unsure of your safety at any time, consult with your local professional.
Now that the circuit is completely turned off, you can safely work.
Few tools needed:
-Phillips Head/Flat Head screw drivers
-Wire stripper
-Electrical Tape
-Wire Connectors (usually supplied with new fixture)
Step 1: Turn off power to circuit as discussed above.
Step 2: Start by removing old fixture. This is usually different in most scenarios because every light is designed slightly different. Usually there will be a decorative nut or screw that will be holding the housing to the wall/ceiling. Next, Remove wire connectors on wires and any other set screws/brackets holding the light fixture in place. You should now be able to free the old fixture and set aside.

A stone firepit is an excellent addition to any house and if you choose to do so, you can build it yourself. It is not necessarily a project for beginners, but anyone with the will to do it, certainly can. There are many different styles of firepits and they range from the fairly simple to relatively complicated. They are all functional, however, when constructed properly and even the plainest ones are beautiful in their simplicity. Here are the basic steps in how to make a stone firepit.
- Carefully choose a spot that is big enough to accommodate as large a structure as you plan to build. Remember that even a small firepit is going to be pretty big. When you are researching how to make a stone firepit, you will find most directions call for a large space. The spot has to be away from anything that may burn such as tree branches, brush, other structures, etc.
- * In addition planning for the pit itself, you need to plan for the area you will be using with and around the firepit. The walls of the firepit are thick, so you’ll need to plan for that and for seating around the firepit.
- Find the center of the space for your firepit and its surrounding area and mark it with a stake. Take a string and tie it to the end of the stick. Stretch the string out to where you want the outer edge of your firepit. Move the string around the stake in a circle and mark that line with chalk or flour or by digging into the grass or dirt there. Clear the circle of grass and you are ready to prepare for the next step in how to make a stone firepit. Continue reading »

- Pour approximately 8 oz. of water in a 1′ x 1′ area and allow the water to stand for a few minutes
- If the water absorbs into the slab and changes the color of the slab by darkening it, it’s a pretty good bet that you will not need to do anything except proceed t cleaning and staining.
- If the water beads up on the surface then there is a sealer on the concrete which will not allow the stain to chemical react with the free lime in the concrete which changes the color of the concrete in the process.

Women’s group takes on home repairs with “fellowship and communion.”
They all giggle when one member of the group suggests they could use a good stud finder.
It’s hard to figure out if the ladies are talking about the tool that helps find a proper wall anchor when hanging a heavy object, or did they mean something else?
After all, when the Tool Time Girls get together, there is plenty of equipment in the mix. There also is a notable absence of men.
They are quick to say that is completely by design. The No. 1 rule in their club of six single, female, Jacksonville homeowners is that no boys are allowed.
The “TTGs,” as they call themselves, formed around 2002 after Betsy Clark found she couldn’t afford to hire a contractor for everything that needed fixing in her Lake Shore-area home. As a member of Avondale United Methodist Church, she tried to worm her way into a home-improvement club of husbands and wives that other congregants created. But the club wouldn’t have her.
She realized she wasn’t alone. There were five other women just like her - from their 30s to their 60s - sitting in the same church pews every Sunday.
So, like a legion of do-it-yourself home-improvement superheroes, they started meeting the first Saturday of each month to mete out justice in repairing their dilapidated residences. From there, the six became fast friends, swapping gossip as they painted walls, sharing secrets as they put up ceiling fans.

Merger of Advance Window & Siding with Kuhn’s Roofing Brings Home Exterior Projects “Under One Roof” for Homeowners
What happens when two well-known, trusted exterior remodeling companies join forces? Area homeowners can now find “everything for the outside” expert installation of roofing, windows, siding, doors, insulation, fencing, and decks. Consumers also benefit from increased convenience, better services, and an iron-clad “above and beyond” guarantee of satisfaction.
Advance, the new company, was formed by merging Advance Window & Siding and Kuhn’s Roofing, both widely respected for the quality of their remodeling services. Kuhn’s Roofing has been in business since 1965, starting as “your typical neighborhood roofer,” offering repairs and re-roof jobs at a fair price. Advance Window & Siding started in 1988, leading the Delaware Valley in premium exterior remodeling projects.
“While the merger has allowed the new company to offer even more value to its customers, the basic premise behind our philosophies hasn’t changed,” stated Advance General Manager, Michael Shelly. “We’ve still got the expertise to get the job right the first time, superior products, and fair prices homeowners can afford.” He continued, “Top it off with our solid warranties and lifetime guarantees, and we’re convinced even the most contractor-wary homeowner will be more than satisfied.”

The sales pitch is simple: Tap into your home equity without taking on more debt, without paying any interest and without having to worry about additional monthly payments, ever.
It’s getting thousands of people each week to look into something called a “REX Agreement,” which might best be described as a home-equity-risk/return-sharing arrangement, a phrase so mind-numbingly complex that it makes it clear this deal is anything but simple.
While there is some truth to the hype, there’s also no denying that REX agreements — and similar “alternative-to-mortgage” deals popping up around the country — have real potential to turn into something with long-lasting and expensive side effects.
The one thing that is most clear about a REX agreement is that it’s a huge bet on the appreciation of your home, and that it looks like a sweet deal, but it has a lot of sour potential. Worse yet, it’s almost impossible to tell who these deals will actually work out for, and who is finding a new way to mortgage their financial future.

Around 80 per cent of people who undertook some form of home improvements over the past year used their savings to help fund the work, it has been found.
According to Halifax, which has just published its 18th annual home improvements survey, savings remain by far the most popular way of paying for the upgrades.
Well behind was credit cards, used by ten per cent of the group, and personal loans, used by five per cent.
Persuasive demographic trends were also found by Halifax when it came to funding methods.
For example, personal loans were found to be most popular among 18 to 34-year-olds, while the age group where savings were most commonly used was found to be the over-65s.
Tony Wilcox, head of savings at Halifax, commented: “This research contradicts the buy now pay later culture which is so often thought to be prevalent in the UK. The fact that the vast majority of people have saved in advance of spending is extremely encouraging. Using savings for such improvements means savers are really seeing the benefits of putting money aside.”

A Fayetteville man says his truck was damaged when he tried to pick up supplies he bought at a home improvement store.
Mark Brady went to Lowe’s Home Improvement to buy wood to build a privacy fence, but before he could even get the materials loaded in his truck, he says he ran into problems. He says after buying the materials a store employee directed him where to pick up the wood. Mark says, “Pull over there the guys will help. I pull up, the guys says come on back, come on back, the next thing I know I’m against a pile of shingles.”
Mark says a manager got involved and wrote an incident report. Mark says within days he got a call from Lowe’s insurance company who told him they’d look into it. He adds, “A couple days came around and it was we’re not going to be able to help you. For them to do me like that and then not want to do anything about it, that’s why I had to call you.”
Troubleshooter Diane Wilson got in touch with a rep with Lowe’s home improvement store. She said they would look into it. Within a week, Mark had a check for one thousand dollars to cover the damage to his truck.

Evelyn Heagney of Franktown lost her husband, Robert, to pancreatic cancer in early August.
A friend she has know for more than 10 years, who wished to remain anonymous, nominated Evelyn to be a recipient of the Helping Hands Project sponsored by the Douglas/Elbert Realtor Association.
“Robert died two weeks before we did the work. He had been a carpenter and the cabinets in Evelyn’s kitchen weren’t finished,” said Diana Hutton, leader of the Nomination Committee. Other work included straightening of Heagney’s carpet, installation of kitchen drawers and a sliding glass door that was donated.
“We received about 20 applications for this first year,” Hutton said. Two homes were chosen by the nomination and sponsor committees after reviewing the applications. The process was difficult because, according to Hutton, “There were so many needs. We choose the ones we thought we could handle considering manual labor.”
Both Realtors and affiliate members sent out e-mail blasts asking everyone they knew to identify people who needed house repairs.
The Helping Hands mission statement is “To help those in need within our community with home improvement projects to better a family’s quality of life.”

When the economy is sagging it forces many people to tighten their financial belts. It’s often a time when buying and selling a home becomes much less of an option - consider the recent housing market debacle - and as a result, more people choose to stay where they are and simply do a little minor home improvement or remodeling.
In an industry that has historically been plagued by poor customer service and shoddy workmanship, home improvement franchises have much to offer. And franchisees like Charlie Rose are the face of this growing, and more reputable, market segment.
“I grew up in the construction and home building industry before going to college and earning a degree in engineering,” says the 35-year-old Tennessee native. “But the corporate world was a high pressure, high stress existence that demanded a lot of time and energy.” With the desire for a family and a little more personal freedom, Rose discovered Handyman Matters and signed on as a franchise in 2004. His territory is in Nashville, Tenn.
“One of the factors I considered was how home improvement-related franchises have a strong economic resilience. They tend to do well in good and bad times.”
